Erica Herzog

Erica Herzog, MD, PhD, is an associate professor at the Yale School of Medicine and director of the Yale Interstitial Lung Disease Center of Excellence. She leads a biomedical laboratory studying idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and other chronic forms of lung disease.

Dr. Herzog is a 2010 recipient of an ATS Foundation/Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis/Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation Research Grant. Her award came at a critical time in her study of semaphorins, a class of proteins, in the development of IPF.

“At the time, it was kind of a risky project,” says Dr. Herzog. “The NIH wasn’t sure about it, but the ATS really thought that it had some potential. The project went on to receive NIH funding, but, more importantly, we went on to really make some critical insights that I think may have the potential to help patients one day.”

The American Thoracic Society improves global health by advancing research, patient care, and public health in pulmonary disease, critical illness, and sleep disorders. Founded in 1905 to combat TB, the ATS has grown to tackle asthma, COPD, lung cancer, sepsis, acute respiratory distress, and sleep apnea, among other diseases.
