ATS Unrestricted Research Grants

5 grants available
$40,000 for 1 year

Target audience:
Early-stage investigators interested in basic science, translational, or clinical research in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine

The focus of these unrestricted research grants is to support early-stage investigators interested in research that advances the knowledge and understanding of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. A primary goal of the ATS Research Program is to enable early-stage investigators the chance to make the transition to careers as established investigators.

The Research Program encourages international and domestic applications in basic, patient-oriented, and public health topics. In the area of public health, the Research Program is particularly interested in funding projects that will inform health policy decisions. These include projects that explore the quality and safety of a specific treatment and compare the effectiveness of different therapies.

The ATS Research Program will award up to five unrestricted research grants for $40,000 for one year for salaries, supplies, or a combination of these two. Indirect costs will not be paid to the sponsoring institution. The Research Program will award one grant to the top scores in each of the three society pillars: pulmonary, critical care, and sleep.* The remaining grants will be awarded to the top scores regardless of the category of submission.

Award-specific eligibility:
• Early-stage investigators (as defined here)
• Must meet eligibility requirements for all grants found here

*While it is intended that there be one award in each pillar (pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine), the ATS Scientific Grant Review Committee (SGRC) reserves the right to alter this distribution dependent upon the significant scientific merit of applications.

Review Process

Please note that after you submit your application it will be reviewed by Research Program staff. If there are any problems or if these guidelines have not been followed, your proposal will be un-submitted. Please make sure that you check your email after you submit your application so that any outstanding issues may be addressed as quickly as possible.

The ATS Scientific Grant Review Committee (SGRC)* will review the applications in early 2024. The membership of the SGRC is listed on the ATS Website and additional ad hoc reviewers will be invited to participate as needed. Funding decisions will be made on the basis of scientific merit, novelty, and responsiveness to the purpose of the specific grant program.

*previously known as the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC)

ATS Policy on Additional Grant Funding

Simultaneous submission of grants with scientific overlap is allowed, but if multiple applications are funded, then the applicant must notify the Research Program within one month of formal notification of award. A subcommittee of the SGRC will assess the degree of overlap. In the case of significant scientific overlap, the applicant will have to choose between the ATS research grant and the other grant. Budgetary overlap is not allowed.
